Teflon is also known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and is a highly useful plastic material. PTFE is one of a class of plastics which is commonly known as fluoropolymers. Teflon has many special properties, which makes it valuable in manufacturing and repurposing. Teflon can only be dissolved by hot fluorine gas and certain molten metals, which makes it resistant to corrosion. Teflon is easily slick and slippery, which makes it a suitable material for coating machine parts which are easily affected by heat, wear and friction. Teflon is used to treat stain-resistance to fabrics, carpets, wall coverings, as well as weatherproof outdoor signs. 1. Teflon was an Accidental Creation

  • In 1938, a former New Carlisle (Ohio) resident named Roy J. Plunkett took up a job in DuPont, New Jersey. Plunkett was given the task to find a non-toxic, non-flammable coolant that can be used in refrigerators. After a number of attempts, he stumbled upon the slippery power that became we all know today as Teflon.
  • During World War 2, atomic bomb designers implemented Teflon to produce and manufacture gaskets and liners that are resistant to the corrosive nature of the bomb.
  • In 1954, French engineers found that by implementing Teflon in coating cookware, the cookware would become non-stick and much easier to clean. This discovery led to the common use of Teflon for kitchenware today. 
  • Thanks to his discovery of the Teflon, Plunkett, who had returned from DuPont in 1975, was given an award and enshrined in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. 


2. Teflon Coated Needles

  • Teflon is implemented in the pharmaceutical industry in coating syringes and other sort of sharp equipment that is used to inject medicine and drugs.
  • By implementing non-stick coating makes it easier for the process of injecting medicine into a patient, which makes it less invasive and less painful.
  • Without the teflon coating, a needle may result in the increased friction and pain and could even break while it is being used.
  • Teflon has a very low sense of friction, which means that it will be less painful and harsh to the patient’s body.

  • A gecko has the ability to climb almost any surface in the world. Geckos have small branching hairs growing from the pads of their feet, which is believed that the branching hairs help them to climb walls vertically as well as hanging upside down from ceilings.
  • Despite their impressive ability to climb and conquer almost any surface, geckos have still not yet mastered Teflon
  • In many scientific experiments, scientists have found that Teflon is a no-go for geckos, as the geckos would fail to get a steady footing on the non-stick material.


4. Teflon Plays an Important Role to NASA Martian Mission

  • In April 2015, a number of non-stick specialists coating solutions were experimented on the wings of aeroplane to see their effectiveness of avoiding insects from getting stuck to the plane surface. Now, NASA is looking into non-stick technology to aid and assist their missions to Mar. 
  • According to recent reports and findings, the atmosphere on Mars is extremely dangerous because of the amount of Martian dust. Martian dust can damage the spaceship by getting the ship stuck to the surface and corroding the metal skeleton of the aircraft. Perhaps a durable non-stick solution might be able to prevent such dust sticking on the spaceship, and it could be one step closer to Mars’s mission launching. 


5. Teflon is used to Manufacture Armour Piercing Bullets

  • Teflon has been used to coat bullet cases in order to lower the amount of wear on the barrel of the gun when fired.
  • In 1982, teflon coating was thought to have enabled bullets to pierce through armour. However, it was not the teflon coating that could pierce through police armor in the US, but rather it is the type of bullets that are used.
  • Compared to other guns, weapons that use teflon-coated bullets fired brass rounds instead of soft lead.
  • Clearly brass is able to pierce through armour easier than lead. Teflon has been wrongly held responsible for ‘cop killer’ bullets.
